Soccer Suffers 3-4 Loss To Drake To End Season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State women's soccer suffered a tough 3-4 loss to Drake Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.  With the loss, the Sycamores are eliminated from postseason play.  ISU finishes the season 4-10-3, and 1-5 in the Missouri Valley.  Drake improves to 8-8-2, and 2-2-2 in Valley action. 

 

Offensively for the Sycamores, Maddie Orf led the team with two goals on three shots.  Orf has a team-leading seven goals on the season.  Sydney Lovelace found the back of the net, improving her total to four.  Sydney Loesing and Kate Johnson added assists.  ISU finished with 17 shots in the match.

 

Brittany San Roman finished the match with six saves, while allowing four goals.  San Roman played every minute of regular season action in net for the Sycamores.  Her 117 saves this season are good for fourth most in a single season. 

 

For the Bulldogs, Rebecca Rodgers continued to be the main offensive threat.  Rodgers finished with three goals on six shots, and added the assist on Kayla Armstrong's goal.  Kasey Hurt, Rhian Pritchard, and Sarah Nicholson each finished with one assist.  The Bulldogs tallied 13 shots in the match. 

 

Kylynn Moyer played the full match in net for the Bulldogs.  Moyer finished with seven saves and a regular season record of 7-7-2.

 

Rodgers scored her 10th goal of the season in the 9th minute of the match.  Pritchard played a ball through to the right of the goal where Rodgers' shot beat San Roman to the lower left corner. 

 

The Sycamores responded in the 29th minute when Lovelace was able to find the back of the net.  Johnson played a ball to Lovelace at the top of the box, when the Bulldog keeper came out to grab the long pass, Lovelace was able to tap the ball away and dribble in for an uncontested shot.  The goal knotted the match up 1-1. 

 

The Bulldogs pulled ahead again in the 33rd minute.  Rodgers served a pass to Armstrong on the left-hand side of the box when Armstrong's shot ricocheted off the left post, hit the ISU keeper in the back and went into the goal. 

 

Orf scored her sixth goal of the season just one minute later.  Loesing was able to feed the ball to Orf who ripped a shot past the keeper and was kicked away by a Drake defender, however the ball had crossed the goal line and the Sycamores had tied it back up at 2-2.

 

In the second half, Rodgers and the Bulldogs pulled ahead again.  In the 57th minute, Freeman relayed a ball in for Rodgers who was able to put it in the left corner of the net to regain the lead at 3-2. 

 

Orf responded in the 71st minute, with an equalizer from about 32 yards out that hit home in the upper left corner of the goal to bring the match to a 3-3 deadlock. 

 

The match remained tied until the 89th minute, when Rodgers found the back of the net again.  Following a Sycamore foul, the Bulldogs earned a free kick from 35 yards out.  Hurt laid the ball into the box where she found Rodgers who was able to head it past San Roman to pull ahead for the final time. 

 

The Sycamores finish the season on a three game losing streak.  The three goals were the most scored by ISU since a 3-3 tie with IUPUI on September 21st.  In the six matches between the IUPUI and Drake, the Sycamores managed three total goals.  ISU finishes with 22 goals on the season.
