Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw With UMKC

Seattle University women's soccer (10-4-2, 6-1-1 WAC) and WAC-leading Kansas City (10-3-3, 6-0-1 WAC) each scored a goal in the second period of regulation but after two overtime periods, neither could add to their tally as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

“That Kansas City team is a much-improved team,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “They were dangerous, organized, and well-coached. We had some great opportunities and, moving forward, we just have to be better at putting away our chances.”

Taylor Ritzman (Holladay, Utah) broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute on an assist by Julia Moravec (Spokane, Wash.) for her eighth goal of the season, but the lead would only last for two minutes.

At the midway mark of the 62nd minute, Kansas City's Emily Herndon evened the tally, taking the ball halfway down the Seattle U half of the field and placing it into the right side of the net.

Seattle U's best scoring chance of the match came in the 14th minute as Isabelle Butterfield's (Bellevue, Wash.) hit the right post as the Redhawks nearly took an earlier lead.

Kiana Kraft (Kent, Wash.) nearly earned the game-winner with just under two minutes in the match, but Kansas City's Nina Tzianos came up with a game-saving save to keep the score even.

In goal, Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) made four saves in the complete game outing while, on the other side of the field, Tzianos made seven saves in the 110 minute outing.

The Redhawks outshot the 'Roos, 23-9, earning 11 corner kicks to UMKC's four. Isabella Guerry (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) led all players on the field with a career-high five shots, two on frame.

Seattle U returns to Championship Field on Sunday for their final regular season home match vs. Chicago State at 12 noon. This year's senior class will be honored prior to the match, so fans are encouraged to come early for the ceremony. Single game tickets can be purchased starting 60 minutes prior to kickoff at the main gate of the field (14th and E Cherry).

Fans are also encouraged to vote for Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) for the Senior CLASS Award at www.seniorCLASSaward.com once per day per device until Nov. 24. Fan voting counts for 1/3 of the final tally towards the winner, which will be announced in Dec. 2014.
