Titans Tip-Off Homestand Against Bowling Green

GAMEDAY CENTRAL

DETROIT (11/28/14)
-- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will tip-off a four game homestand on Sunday (Nov. 30) when the Titans host Bowling Green at historic Calihan Hall. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be televised locally on WADL and nationally on ESPN3. The game can also be listened to on 97.1 The Ticket with the voice of the Titans Dan Leach.

LAST OUTING
Senior forward Juwan Howard Jr. was named the Progressive Legends Classic sub-regional MVP after scoring a game-high 28 points to help lead the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team to an 82-79 win over Toledo in the championship game on Tuesday at Savage Arena. The win also snapped the Rockets 18-game home winning streak that dated back to Jan. 18, 2012.
 
Detroit (4-2) trailed by five 71-66 with 3:31 left in regulation, before closing out the game with a 16-8 run, including a three-pointer from senior guard Brandan Kearney with 49 seconds left to give the Titans a 78-75 lead. Detroit then made four-straight free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
 
Howard finished with 28 points – 17 in the second half – to lead Detroit, while Horizon League Freshman of the Week Paris Bass recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bass also had four assists, one steal and one blocked shot and was named to the All-Tournament team.
 
Sophomore Jarod Williams scored 13 points to go along with three steals and three assists, while junior Anton Wilson added 10 points – eight in the second half – to go with two steals. 
 
Detroit shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) overall, 41.3 percent (7-of-17) from downtown, while dishing out a season-high 16 assists and recording 10 steals.

ABOUT BGSU
The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season by dominating the paint, as the Falcons outscored Southeast Missouri State 36-20 in points in the paint, 17-9 in second chance points, and hauled down a total of 15 offensive rebounds in the 62-54 home win on Tuesday night at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio.

The game, which saw four lead changes and a total of seven ties, was iced late on six straight made free throws by the Falcons over the final 40 seconds of the contest. 
 
Senior forward Richaun Holmes led the way for the Falcons with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds, while fellow starter Spencer Parker added 10 points and four rebounds of his own in only 16 minutes of action due to foul woes. Zack Denny chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and three steals, while junior forward Delvin Dickerson tallied six points, four of which came off two fast break dunks, and a career-high seven rebounds. Guard David Joseph led the Falcons with four assists.
 
BGSU shot 23-of-57 (40.4 percent) overall for the game, but was only 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from behind the three-point arc. The Redhawks connected on 19-of-46 (41.3 percent) shot attempts from the field and was 6-of-15 (40 percent) from long distance. However, the Falcons had nine steals and forced SEMO into 17 turnovers for the game.

TITANS vs. BGSU
This will 40th meeting between Detroit and Bowling Green, with the Titans leading the all-time series 23-16. BGSU has won the last three meetings including a 64-62 win at the Stroh Center on Dec. 22, 2013. The  last win for Detroit in the series was a 71-62 victory on Nov. 27, 2010 at Calihan Hall.
 
FIVE-GAME HOLIDAY TICKET PACKAGE
The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics is helping kick off the holiday season by announcing a five-game Horizon League Holiday Pack for just $55. For that price, Detroit Titans fans will get men's basketball tickets to five Horizon League home games in 2015 at historic Calihan Hall.

In addition, the first 25 fans that purchase the Holiday Pack will also receive a free Titan coffee mug (one per pack).

The tickets are good for upper reserved seating and the ticket package opens with the highly-anticipated first men's basketball meeting of the season between Detroit and Oakland on Jan. 10 in what is also the first men's basketball Metro Series rivalry meeting.

The other four conference home games in the package are against league favorite Green Bay on Jan. 17, UIC on Feb. 8, Cleveland State on Feb. 13 and Valparaiso on Feb. 25 for the regular season finale. The games are locked in and not interchangeable for another home game.
  
BASS NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball freshman guard/forward Paris Bass has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week following strong performances last week against Oregon, Michigan and South Alabama.

Bass won Freshman of the Week honors after averaging 9.3 ppg. and 4.0 rpg., for the Titans. He recorded eight points and two rebounds in Detroit's game at Oregon on Monday night. He followed up that performance with 12 points, six rebounds, a steal and an assist in Detroit's game at 22nd-ranked Michigan. He closed the week with eight points, four rebounds and three blocked shots in Detroit's 66-53 win over South Alabama.

HOWARD IS ALMOST 39
Detroit senior forward Juwan Howard Jr. is closing in on becoming the 39th Titan to join the 1,000-point club. Howard enters Sunday's game with 946 points, just 54 shy of reaching 1,000. The last Titan to join the club was Jason Calliste during the 2012-13 season when he finished 31st overall with 1,107 points.
 
UDM SELECTED TO HOST NCAA TOURNAMENT
It was announced Monday (Nov. 17) that Detroit was selected as one of the eight host sites for first- and second-round games in the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. University of Detroit Mercy will serve as the host institution with the games being played at the new Detroit arena March 16 & 18. Exact times and ticket availability for those contests will be released at a later date.

Downtown Detroit last hosted the NCAA tournament in 2009 and 2008, when the men's Final Four and Midwest Regional were played at Ford Field, respectively. The Palace of Auburn Hills welcomed early round games in 2013. In addition to the tournament, the area has welcomed other NCAA events, including the Men's Frozen Four (2010), the Division I Wrestling Championship (2007), and the Women's Bowling National Championship (2009, 2011, 2013).

RED, WHITE AND BLUE
Detroit is just one of 15 teams in the nation to have both an active player and coach with USA Basketball. Senior guard Brandan Kearney was a member of the 2010 USA Youth Olympic Games Team that finished in fourth place with a 5-2 record in Singapore. He also played on the 2009 USA U16 National Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 slate at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Mendoza, Argentina.
 
Coach McCallum was an assistant coach for the 2000 USA World Championship For Young Men Qualifying Team and helped coach the USA to a silver medal and a 4-1 slate. His son and former Titan Ray McCallum played on the 2011 USA World University Games Team that finished with a 7-1 record, but dropped its quarterfinal contest and returned home in fifth place.

Detroit will return to Dick Vitale Court on Monday (Dec. 1) as the Titans host Aquinas College for Star Wars Night at historic Calihan Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised locally on Comcast 900 and nationally on ESPN3.
