Herrmann Leads Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, S.D.—Sophomore Kacey Herrmann had a career night but the South Dakota State volleyball team lost to Northern Iowa, 3-1, Tuesday in a nonconference match in Frost Arena.

With the 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 loss, the Jackrabbits fall to 6-19 on the season and UNI improves to 13-8.

Herrmann (Rapid City) recorded a career-high 14 kills while hitting .250, registering a match-high 19 digs and tying a career high with four block assists. It was her second double-double of the season and third of her career.

Junior Wagner Larson (Sioux Falls) had seven kills and five block assists and sophomore Tiara Gibson (Clear Lake) added eight kills and three block assists.

Defensively, junior Alanna Pengilly (Watertown) added 17 digs and classmate Lizzie Palmer (Sioux Falls) had 14 digs.

In the first set, the Jackrabbits jumped out to a 13-9 lead, but the Panthers responded with a 6-2 run that tied the match at 15. UNI pushed the lead to 23-16 with an 8-1 run. SDSU scored the next three points, but Northern Iowa closed the set with an ace.

There were two ties in the second set before UNI used a 5-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Panthers outscored the Jacks 4-3 to close the set.

The Jackrabbits led 8-3 early in the third set, but Northern Iowa took an 18-16 lead with a 5-0 run. SDSU responded with a 7-1 run fueled by kills from senior Margit Hansing (Urbandale, Iowa), sophomore Emily Veldman (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Brooke Leetham (Westmister, Colo.) to take a 23-19 lead.  The Jacks won the set when junior Carley Gerving (Rapid City) registered one of her seven kills.

Both teams battled in the fourth set until Northern Iowa went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. The Jacks got kills from Larson and Herrmann and used a UNI error to push the score to 24-22, but the Panthers finished the match with a kill.

Eryca Hingtgen lead the Northern Iowa attack with 19 kills and 15 digs. Kinsey Caldwell had 47 set assists and 15 digs while Leigh Pudwill added 10 kills.

South Dakota State returns to action Friday when it travels to Denver for an 8 p.m. Summit League match.
