Day One ResultsLAS CRUCES, N.M. — The ACU golf team played perhaps its best two rounds of the season Monday as the Wildcats carry a sixth-place team standing into Tuesday's final round at the New Mexico State Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Tournament.
The Wildcats fired rounds of 3-over-par 287 and 2-over-par 286 for a two-round total of 5-over-par 573. ACU is 13 shots off the lead as New Mexico State shot rounds of 276 and 284 for a two-round total of even-par 560 on its home course, the 7,242-yard, par-71 layout at the University Golf Course.
The Aggies lead second-place Sam Houston State by seven shots (283-284—567) and third-place Texas State by eight shots (284-284–568). Texas-El Paso is in fourth at 570 (280-290) and Oral Roberts is in fifth at 571 (283-288). ACU is followed by Wichita State and Missouri-Kansas City, which are tied for seventh at 574, Western New Mexico in ninth at 576 and Incarnate Word in 10th at 580. The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday, which will also serve as the Wildcats' final round of the fall season.
Junior transfer
Dillon Vaughn paced the Wildcats by firing rounds of 1-under-par 70 and 2-under-par 69 to card a two-round total of 3-under-par 139, putting him into a tie for fourth place in the individual medalist standings. ACU's No. 1 player, senior
Corbin Renner, shot rounds of 70 and 72 for a total of even-par 142 and a tie for 15th going into the final round.
Robert Johnson followed a 5-over-par 76 in the first round with an even-par 71 in the second round to post a score of 147, putting him in a tie for 42nd place, along with teammate
Clarke Hudgins (73-74—147).
Brandon Stites is tied for 58th after rounds of 74 and 76 for a 150 total.
