News & notes from the first week of the SU men's soccer season

'CUSE WINS CNY SOCCER CLASSIC
The Orange imposed its will all weekend long, defeating both Niagara and St. Mary's (Calif.) by a score of 3-0 on its way to becoming the inaugural Central New York Soccer Classic champions. It was the second regular-season tournament title for the Orange under head coach Ian McIntyre. SU claimed the Mayor's Cup XXXVI crown in 2012, McIntyre's third year at the helm.

ORANGE DEBUTS
Liam Callahan, Noah Rhynhart, Korab Syla, Louis Cross and Julian Buescher all made their first career starts for the Orange in the season opener against Niagara on Friday. Cross made his debut a memorable one. The University of Akron transfer tallied SU's first goal of the season in the 22nd minute. In addition, freshman Danny Apajee made his college debut in the match coming off the bench and logging eight minutes.

Against St. Mary's Sunday, redshirt freshman Kenny Lassiter saw his first action in a regular-season game. Lassiter played 25 minutes in the second half.

ANOTHER 2-0 START
With its two wins at the CNY Soccer Classic, the Orange is once again off to a 2-0-0 start. It's the third straight year Syracuse has won back-to-back games to open the season. The Orange topped Colgate and Hartwick to start the 2013 campaign and beat Albany and Binghamton to open 2012. SU can start the year 3-0-0 for the first time since 2006 with a win at Rutgers on Sept. 4.

MAGIC NUMBER
Syracuse improved to 228-16-7 (.922) all-time when scoring at least three goals in a match with its wins against Niagara and St. Mary's. The Orange has won 41 straight games under that scenario. The team's last loss when scoring at least three times was on Oct. 18, 1998 at Georgtown, 5-4.

NON-CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK EXTENDED
The Orange continued its run of dominance against non-league opponents. The Orange has won 13 straight games against non-conference foes, including its 2012 NCAA Tournament victories at Cornell and VCU. Syracuse is now 16-2 in regular-season, non-conference games since the start of 2012.
