Hartmann Scores Twice as Green Bay Opens Season with Win

By: Joey Daniels (@GBJoeyD)

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Starting the season off strong, the Green Bay women's soccer team began the season 1-0 on Friday night by defeating IUPUI 3-1 at Santaga Stadium. Head coach Kacey Burke registered coaching victory No. 1 to start her career, thanks to a pair of goals from junior Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.).

The Phoenix (1-0-0) begins 2014 on the right foot, scoring two goals in the first half and another in the second to come away with the 3-1 win. Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) got things started just six minutes into the game, when she made a pretty first-touch to find the back of the net. Eigenberger received a pass in front of the IUPUI keeper from Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.), then dodged a defender to give Green Bay a 1-0 lead.

Her forward-striking teammate Hartmann made the score 2-0 less than three minutes later, when she raced through the Jaguars' defense to power one into the back of the net. After IUPUI (0-1-0) answered with a penalty kick goal in the 31st minute, the two teams went into halftime with Green Bay ahead 2-1.

In the second half, after 25 minutes of scoreless action, Hartmann put things out of reach with her own PK in the 70th minute. The attempt was set up by a handball call against IUPUI, and Hartmann calmly delivered.

With the score 3-1 in favor of the Phoenix, the Green Bay defense would keep IUPUI out of goal for the final 20 minutes of play. Keeper Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) begins the season 1-0-0 with the victory, but it wasn't without help from her stout back line of Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.), Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.), Sydney Born (Edina, Minn.) and Justy Linton (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

The midfield controlled play throughout the match, leading to a 15-5 shots on goal advantage in favor of the Phoenix. Behle finished with four saves in the match.

“The team's excited, they played really well and they're looking forward to the next game,” Burke said.

The team will look to start the season off 2-0-0 when it plays host to Ball State this Sunday (Aug. 24) at 1 p.m.
