Mattocks Earns First Defensive Honor

GREENSBORO – A North Carolina A&T cornerback won MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week as fifth-year senior Donald Mattocks was the conference's selection on Monday.

Junior corner Tony McRae earned the accolade last week when he made nine tackles (seven solo) and broke up five passes in the Aggies win over Elon.

On Saturday at home against Chowan, Mattocks intercepted three first-half Chowan passes and returned them for a total of 80 yards. He had a pick-6 in the second quarter before it was called back for excessive celebration. Mattocks' three picks tied Alonza Barnett's single-season school record set on Oct. 26, 1991 versus Howard.

Mattocks leads the nation in interceptions per game (1.3) and has five INTs on the season. Mattocks (5-8, 178, Burlington, N.C., Eastern Alamance) is in his first season as a starter after serving mainly on special teams and as a reserve. His play this season has helped the Aggies pass defense tremendously. A&T leads the nation in interceptions with 10.

A&T begins conference play on Saturday, Sept. 27 when it travels to Washington, D.C., to play the Howard Bison at 1 p.m., at Greene Memorial Stadium.
